MTD Compliant

HMRC is well on its way to making tax digital. VAT registered businesses with a turnover above the £85k threshold have to keep digital records and file their VAT returns using compatible software such as Xero.

From 6 April 2024, Self-Assessment returns will also be operated by MTD, meaning self-employed individuals will have to use compatible software, such as Xero, to keep records of their income and expenses digitally and send a quarterly summary to HMRC rather than once a year as has previously happened.

Making Tax Digital

What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a government initiative intended to encourage businesses to keep their tax records up to date and provide information to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Businesses and individuals who fall within the MTD thresholds must use compatible software such as Xero to keep digital records and submit their records to HMRC.

Making Tax Digital for VAT

MTD for VAT was first introduced in April 2019 for businesses and individuals over the VAT threshold (£85,000).

These businesses are required to keep digital records for VAT purposes and submit them to HMRC on MTD compatible software such as Xero.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) Key dates

April 2019

VAT registered businesses with a turnover above the VAT threshold (£85,000) were required to register for Making Tax Digital for VAT.  Under the new MTD rules, affected businesses were required to keep digital VAT records, and submit their VAT returns via MTD-compliant software.

April 2022

The rules were extended to all VAT registered businesses, regardless of their turnover. As such. all VAT registered businesses will be required to follow MTD for VAT rules from April 2022.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) will be rolled out for self-employed businesses and landlords with annual business or property income above £10,000.
